There are reports from France suggesting that Yaya Touré is itching for a move away from Premier League holders Manchester City before the start of next season to possibly Liverpool or Chelsea according to the Daily Express.
Touré seems to have had a u-turn in his attitude to staying at Manchester City after only signing a four-year deal with the club back in April 2013.
The Ivory Coast international had one of his best campaigns with the club last year but rumours of Touré’s unhappiness could now see him move on from Manchester City to either Liverpool or Chelsea if reports are to be believed.
Touré is a player that would almost certainly get his game for any team in the Premier League but the question is, which team’s system would the former Barcelona man fit into best?
Firstly there’s Chelsea with an array of attacking midfielders like Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian. Supplement these players with the new signing of Cesc Fabregas and you have as potent a midfield as any Premier League rival.
This is where the flaw in a rumour of Touré joining the London club may falter in that José Mourinho has already recruited a world-class midfielder in Cesc Fabregas and it would be difficult to see him splashing out more money on another midfielder when he already has so many options.
So what of Liverpool then? They have an equally expansive selection of midfield options but don’t have an as equally talented midfield as the Blues. Steven Gerrard is still their standout midfield player, with Lucas, new signing Adam Lallana and finally Jordan Henderson being the competition for Yaya Touré.
Looking at this selection of rivals for places you would have to say a move to Liverpool may be more suited to Touré if he is to go. The talent he possesses would outclass any of Liverpool’s central midfield players with Gerrard being the only player that comes close. Looking to the future for Brendan Rodgers; Touré also has slightly more time on his side than the Liverpool captain.
Another factor that Touré would have to consider if he is to move is that the Merseyside club are on an upward trajectory at the moment and with Champions League football also a huge part of Liverpool’s season this year, maybe players of Touré’s stature will be attracted to the Reds where they once may not have been before. It cannot be ignored either that Yaya’s older brother Kolo is with the Reds and this could be another factor for a move to Liverpool.
With plenty of time left to transfer deadline day it will be interesting to see how the situation develops but my money at the moment if Touré is to move on from Manchester City would be to Liverpool.
