Italian international Simone Zaza is on the verge of swapping Juventus for West Ham, with a fee of around €28m (£24m) to sign the striker agreed between the two clubs.

English and Italian reports had last night claimed that the deal had been struck between the two parties, and West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has confirmed this to be the case at a press conference this morning.

In fact, Bilic went one further and revealed that the deal is closer to completion than had previous anticipated as personal terms between the club an Zaza have already been agreed.

The move will bring to an end West Ham’s summer-long search for a striker. The likes of Christian Benteke, Wilfired Bony, Alexandre Lacazette and Michy Batshuayi have all been linked with the club, and while they thought they had found their man earlier this month after agreeing a €26m fee with Milan for Carlos Bacca, the Colombian international turned them down.

However, in Zaza they are gaining a highly-competent striker yet to enter his peak years. He arrived at Juventus in an €18m deal from Sassulo last summer, but was unable to nail down a place in Max Allegri’s side ahead of Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Álvaro Morata.

He finished the season with 8 goals but only started in 8 matches in total for the Bianconeri.

In terms of his international career, he has 14 caps for the Italian senior side, scoring one goal in that time. However, his time with the Azzurri will probably be forever associated with that horrendous penalty in the Euro 2016 quarter final penalty shootout defeat to Germany earlier this summer…

Wolfsburg were also heavily linked with the 25-year-old, but it seems that West Ham’s determination has seen them win the race for the player. He is due to arrive in London today, and the deal could be announced as early as this evening.
