Weekly Transfer Talk: Cesc Fabregas back in London

Colm Hayes is here to take us through the week’s transfer rumours and done deals from across Europe.

Easily the most talked about player in transfer terms this week is Cesc Fabregas, and he has finally made his move to Chelsea to end the first of what will surely be many transfer sagas this summer.

With the Fabregas deal in the bag and the probable signing of Diego Costa, the Blues will be a serious force to be reckoned with in all competitions next season.

In paper talk, the Daily Mail has reported that Croatian sensation Dejan Lovren has handed in a transfer request in the hope of joining a Champions League club, with Liverpool seemingly a likely destination.

Southampton are a close second to United as the most talked about club in this transfer window, with the polar opposite of United’s situation going on at St. Mary’s as several of their players are linked with moves away.

The papers are naturally full to the brim with rumours of impending deals for the red side of Manchester. The Daily Express say that £20m-rated Bastian Schweinsteiger is now top of Louis Van Gaal’s Bayern Munich wishlist, having missed out on Thomas Muller.

Talksport declare that the Dutchman will have to fork out £24m to trigger a release clause int he  contract of Atletico’s Miranda, while the Guardian report that the club are keen on Chilean firecracker Alexís Sanchez with Barcelona seemingly planning a summer clearout.

Another medium through which transfer rumours are being vociferously fuelled is social media site Twitter. The twittersphere is rife with rumours on a daily basis, with numerous ‘In-The-Know’ accounts spreading gossip like wildfire. Information emanating from these accounts definitely needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but they provide interesting and sometimes factual transfer news.

The most well known of these ITK accounts seems to be ‘IndyKaila’, due in no small part to receiving some twitter love from none other than Paddy Power. Some of Indy’s rumours during the week include Luke Shaw agreeing personal terms with Man Utd, with the Red Devils set to make a bid for promising French attacker Antoine Griezmann and also hold talks with Porto’s Colombian hitman Jackson Martínez, who is rumoured to be wanted by Arsenal as well.

It looks as though the world and its mother will be linked to the Old Trafford club this summer after their failings in last summer’s window and an extremely shoddy season.

In more tabloid news, the Express are claiming that José Mourinho would be willing to allow Ramires to leave for Real Madrid if the deal involved former Spurs star Luka Modric moving in the other direction. One would imagine Ramires will be hauling a suitcase of cash to the Spanish capital if this move ever occurs. Goal.com say Yaya Touré will remain at Manchester City this season after overcoming the emotional distress caused by the club allegedly forgetting the Ivorian powerhouse’s birthday.

The transfer rumour mill is surprisingly slow this week in churning out City-related gossip, with just the Mirror stating that long-time target Porto target Fernando is cutting his holiday short to ensure his £16m move goes through.

There are also several sources claiming that Bacary Sagna’s switch to The Citizens is imminent. Finally to more North London clubs, with both Arsenal and Tottenham seemingly very keen on Mario Mandzukic, who has allegedly fallen out with manager Pep Guardiola.

Away from the Premier League, Talksport claim that Barcelona have reached a verbal agreement with one of world football’s hottest properties; German wizard Marco Reus. The Catalan club could possibly benefit from the young star missing out on the World Cup, with many players’ values becoming enormously inflated following successful campaigns at the tournament.

Another name linked with the Spanish giants is that of Miranda, with Barcelona seemingly a likelier destination for the Brazilian than Manchester this summer.

In an interesting turn of events, French paper L’Équipe are saying that Monaco are no longer interested in former Barca man Victor Valdes with City and Liverpool now keeping tabs on the Spanish shot-stopper.

On to the Serie A and a rather bizarre rumour coming from the Daily Mirror that Rafa Benítez wants none other than Jermaine Pennant, available on a free, to join his former manager at Napoli. Strange, but unsurprising.

AC Milan have followed up on signing PSG’s Alex by securing a deal for his former teammate Jeremy Menez, with new manager and AC cult hero Filippo Inzaghi keen to build a squad capable of rekindling past glories at the San Siro.

On the other side of Milan, where Internazionale will miss out on Spurs record signing Erik Lamela who is poised to make a season-long loan move to Napoli according to Talksport.

That’s all for this week! Expect the rumour mill to really pick up pace in the coming weeks as the World Cup creates price rises and highlights new stars for the powers of club football to set their sights on. Whoever you support, it should certainly be an interesting and entertaining summer of transfers!
