The Players Championship tees off today at TPC Sawgrass and we can’t wait.
The unofficial “5th major of the year” delivers on its billing as a top class tournament every year, with a star studded line up of the world’s finest golfers going head to head in the typically glorious Florida sunshine.
This year, as usual, we will see the cream of the crop in golfing circles compete for the championship.
Masters champion, Sergio Garcia is aiming to add more prestige to his trophy cabinet this year with a win this week. He won the Players back in 2008. Jason Day is the defending champion, seeking to retain his crown. World number one, Dustin Johnson has overcome the back injury which forced him out of Augusta in April having fallen down the stairs on the eve of the tournament. He is sure to be contention come Sunday. Rory McIlroy, fresh off the back of his honeymoon and inking a $100 million contract with TaylorMade, is shooting for his first victory at the tournament this week.
Rickie Fowler won The Players in 2015 and has clearly taken a fancy to TPC Sawgrass. The 28-year-old has already won The Honda Classic this year and is tipped to have a strong say in the outcome of this week’s event. On his day, Fowler is more than capable of mixing it with the very best golfers in the world.
In his practise round yesterday, Rickie treated us to a moment of genuine magic.
On the famous par three 17th hole at Sawgrass, “the island hole” as it is commonly referred to, the world number nine hit a stunning ace. Anyone familiar with the Tiger Woods PGA Tour playstation games of the past will remember the fun of attempting to just hit the green on this hole will appreciate what an achievement this is.
Hopefully for Rickie’s sake he has some more where this came from saved for Thursday all the way through to Sunday. Check out the sublime hole-in-one in the clip below:
