What a moment…
Sergio Garcia has long been a fan favourite on the tour but until last night, major titles had escaped him. That all changed in a dramatic playoff with Justin Rose at Augusta late last night (GMT).
Having both completed their 72 regulation holes on nine under par, the two Europeans were paired off for sudden-death additional holes.
Garcia and Rose began their playoff at the par-4 18th where Rose’s drive found the trees, forcing him to chip out and give the Spaniard an early advantage. Meanwhile, Garcia’s drive was much better, finding the fairway.
Garcia and Rose’s subsequent approach shots landed at 12 feet and 14 feet respectfully. However, Rose missed the putt giving Garcia two chances to win the championship. What happened next is something many golf fans have been waiting to see for a very long time:
This was Garcia’s 19th Masters appearance and 74th major championship. Finally, after all the time, he has his win and in doing so, sets a new record.
He is now the golfer with the most major appearances before his maiden victory. Something tells me that after second places at the US Open (2007 & 2014) and the PGA (1999 & 2008), that wait made this victory all the sweeter.
