Liverpool have emerged as a possible destination for Colombia striker Radamel Falcao, who is widely tipped to leave Monaco this summer. The Anfield club are confident of a deal taking place, according to the Metro.
Falcao has been expected to leave Monaco all summer with Real Madrid and Manchester City touted as possible destinations for the former Atletico Madrid striker. However, Liverpool have now emerged as strong contenders for the Monaco man.
Respected Italian journalist Mina Rzouki has indicated that Liverpool hold the advantage in negotiations to sign the Monaco striker. A loan deal could also be a possibility as Liverpool may not be willing to pay the huge transfer fee for the 28-year-old striker.
Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim was asked last month whether Falcao was going to stay in Ligue 1. Jardim told French paper L’Equipe:
‘For now, he is a Monaco player and I am counting on him.’
The Monaco coach was not very convincing in his response about the future of his star striker. Falcao only joined Monaco last summer in what was a surprise move as many had expected the Colombian leave for Real Madrid, they however turned their attention towards Gareth Bale and this summer have signed James Rodriguez.
The 28-year-old has recently returned from injury and scored for Monaco against Arsenal in the Emirates Cup. With Monaco’s highest attendance only 14,753 vs Montpellier last year, it is believed that Falcao would prefer a return to one of the bigger leagues in European football and a move to Liverpool is now looking more probable.
Manchester City have also been linked, but with financial fair play limiting their spending they are likely to turn their attention on signing a defender, which leaves Liverpool in pole position to sign the Colombian, If an initial loan deal can be agreed it may make it more possible for the Reds to pay the huge wages that Falcao’s representatives may demand.
Falcao has proven that when fit he is one of the most feared strikers in world football. scoring over 50 goals in La Liga during his two seasons with Atletico Madrid.
It is believed that Falcao moved to Monaco because of the strong influence of a third party and with James Rodriguez leaving, Falcao may be the next player to depart Ligue 1. Falcao’s talents would be best served playing in a more high profile league along with the game’s best players.
A move to Real Madrid has long been touted but that looks increasingly unlikely and now Liverpool have emerged as strong contenders to sign the striker.
