Toby Alderweireld Linked With Liverpool Move

Reports coming from Spain indicate that Atletico Madrid could be willing to offload Belgian international, Toby Alderweireld for as much as £8 million, with as many as three Premier League clubs reportedly interested, including Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal, according to the Daily Express.

A transfer to a team in England cannot be out of the question when one looks at Alderweireld’s record last term. The 25-year-old managed just twelve appearances in La Liga and doesn’t look to be a player, at this moment in time, that will have a productive future at the Madrid club.

All three teams linked to the player could be improved by another defensive option but this writer believes particularly so for Liverpool. Out of all the teams that finished in the Premier League’s top four last season they conceded the most goals. Liverpool countered this by scoring more than most teams but that will simply not be possible without Luis Suarez’s 31 goals.

With the Daily Express also reporting that Daniel Agger could possibly be leaving the club before this summer’s transfer window is shut, it adds another incentive for the club to bring in a player that can improve their squad defensively. The Merseyside club are competing for four different trophies this year and will need cover at the back.

Part of the Belgian World Cup team that went all the way to the quarter-finals before narrowly losing out to eventual winners Argentina, Alderweireld has proved he is capable of performing on the big stage but whether he can do it at a Premier League club remains to be seen. If a team in England is to sign the Atleti defender, Liverpool makes the most sense as shipping 50 goals next season will be too much to sustain a second place finish or even make a title challenge.
