With Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal having just guided the Netherlands to 3rd at the World Cup it seems inevitable that he may target some of the young players he showed faith in.
Arjen Robben has already spoke of Louis Van Gaal’s approach for the flying winger to join him at Old Trafford.
“I have a special bond with him. He is the most important coach in my career. After the match he did ask me to come to Manchester.”
It was not clear how serious the offer was but Robben, who was smiling while speaking about it, added:
“It is not an option. I will stay at Bayern Munich.”
Robben is set to stay in Munich, but Van Gaal may target some of his Dutch team mates especially if they fail to land more high profile signings such as Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels. United could find it difficult to sign such high profile players without the lure of Champions League football. Here are three players who impressed at this year’s World Cup and could be targeted by Louis Van Gaal.
1. Daley Blind
The 24-year-old impressed at this year’s World Cup at left back. The Ajax player is more accustomed to playing in a defensive midfield role and he would add versatility to a Manchester United squad. Blind is well aware of the speculation linking him with a move away, telling reporters.
“The link with Manchester United is easily made because Robin [van Persie] is playing there and Van Gaal takes over next season.”
Blind is under contract until 2016 and it is believed that he can be purchased for as little as £6 million. He provided a magnificent assist for Robin Van Persie’s sublime headed effort against Spain.
2. Memphis Depay
Depay is an exciting young winger who proved the difference for the Netherlands against Australia firing in a long powerful effort, a trademark of the PSV winger. The young winger is unsure of where his future lies. He told reporters.
“I don’t know if I will stay at PSV after the World Cup, you never know what will happen.’
Depay has been christened the ‘Dutch Cristiano Ronaldo’ and possesses similar attributes such as pace, strength and a powerful shooting ability from distance. The 20-year-old scored 13 goals for PSV in the Dutch top flight last year and it is thought he could be purchased for about £15m. With Nani and Ashley Young being linked with moves away, Depay could be an alternative option. The PSV winger was nominated for the Young Player of the Tournament and he added pace and creativity to the Dutch team when introduced.
3. Stefan De Vrij
Manchester United have lost Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand t Inter Milan and QPR respectively, and will look to strengthen the centre of their defence. De Vrij has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the last number of weeks.
The 22-year-old showed maturity beyond his years at this year’s World Cup. He has nearly 20 caps for the Dutch national team and is a player that Van Gaal has shown a lot of faith in.
Feyenoord sporting director Martin van Geel has admitted that De Vrij could be leaving the Eredivisie club.
“He played an amazing World Cup and his contract is due to expire in one year. If the right club comes along and puts in a good offer, we will definitely look at it.”
De Vrij was selected in the team of the tournament along with Dutch team mate Arjen Robben. The 22-year-old may not be the quickest but he is an intelligent defender who is adept in possession. If Manchester United miss out on Mats Hummels. De Vrij may be a good alternative and at 22 years old, his best years are more than likely ahead of him.
