Manchester City had announced the signing of Eliaqium Mangala yesterday. The fee was not disclosed in a statement by the Manchester club but is has emerged that they paid £42.9m for the defender according to the Independent.
The reported fee of £42.9m would go a long way to explaining the lengthy negotiatons for the 23-year-old defender who had been linked witha move to the Ethihad for the last number of months.
Porto released a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) where they outlined that they received £24.4m for just 56.57% of the player’s rights.
Manuel Pellegrini spoke of his delight that the move is now finalized on Manchester City’s official website.
“I’m delighted to have added a player of Eliaquim’s quality in the squad ahead of the new season.
“He is already a fine player but in my opinion, he has all of the mental, physical, technical and tactical attributes to become one of Europe’s very best defenders.
“Eliaquim is a player I believe will make an immediate impact in the Premier League, thanks to his physicality, his reading of the game and quality on the ball.
“I think he will prove to be a great signing for us.
The 23-year-old’s agent Jorge Mendes who has been involved in many of the huge transers in Portuguse and European football is said to have received £14.2m as part of the deal according to the Independent. Mendes currently represents Falcao and Angel Di Maria, both players who have been linked with moves this summer.
The Portugese agent was also involved in the controversial transfer of Portuguese winger Bebe, who ended up costing Manchester United £7m, despite the winger having very little experience in professional football. The winger looked out of his depth at Old Trafford rarely featuring for the first team.
Mangala’s former club Standard Liege are said to have recieved £4.3m from the deal that has seen Mangala become the second costliest defender in world football.
The 23-year-old has featured in the Champions League in the last four out of five seasons, so he is experienced at the highest level of European football for a defender so young.
Mangala started his career at Standard Liege as the defender moved to Belgium as a five-year-old, however he has chosen to represent the country he was born in, making his debut for Les Bleus in June 2013 against Uruguay.
The young defender won the Portuguese league title twice with FC Porto in 2011/12 and 2012/13 and the Manchester City defender has finaly joined in a complicated transfer.
Manchester City have acquired one of the brightest young defenders in world football but if the £42.9m is to be believed then it looks to be a huge fee for a 23-year-old, who was not first choice with the French national team.
