“It’s something I think about almost every day, I always think about the dream of winning it – or the disappointment if I was never to win it. ” – Steven Gerrard speaking about the Premier League Title.
Steven Gerrard is one of the greatest Liverpool players to have donned the famous Liverpool jersey. He is regarded as one of the most technically gifted midfielders of the modern game and to many he is known as the greatest player to have never won a league title. Let’s take a look at the legacy of the Liverpool skipper.
Some speculate that Steven Gerrard will have failed to prove himself as an Anfield legend if he does not claim a Premier League title by the end of his playing career, adding his name to the unwanted list of Liverpool greats whose trophy cabinet is missing that all-important ingredient. Having won every major domestic cup in England and every continental cup, the Premier League title is the only piece of silverware eluding the England midfielder.
At the moment Liverpool have one hand on the title, leading Chelsea by two points at the top of the table. The last time Liverpool came this close to the title was in the 2008/2009 campaign when they finished as runners-up to Manchester United.
Gerrard, Brendan Rodgers, the rest of the Liverpool squad and every die-hard Liverpool fan know they can’t afford to suffer any losses in their remaining two fixtures, having suffered a 2-0 defeat to second place Chelsea last weekend at the expense of a Gerrard “slip-up”.
If Gerrard does lead the Reds to Premier League glory, their first league title in 24 years, he will be remembered as the greatest player in the club’s history. If he fails to deliver, he will still have edged his place in time after 27 years of servitude to the club, but there will be an asterisk next to his name informing people of his inability to earn a Premier League medal.
“I don’t believe he needs the medal to cement his legacy but if you are a genuine football fan, for everything he has done over the past 15 years, you should want to see him complete his collection.” – Jamie Carragher speaking about Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard has been a life-long Liverpool supporter. He is the embodied soul of the famous club and has accomplished many things since breaking into the first team in 1998. He is most remembered for his man-of-the-match performance in the 2005 Champions League final against Italian side AC Milan, captaining Liverpool to the club’s fifth European cup since 1977.
Apart from winning many club honors, Gerrard has also received many individual awards throughout the course of his career; 2001 PFA Young Player of the Year, 2006 PFA Player’s Player of the Year, rightfully earning a spot on the UEFA Team of the Year 2005, 2006, 2007 and FIFA/FIFPro World XI 2007, 2008 and 2009. The list goes on and on.
Steven Gerrard has become obsessed with chasing that elusive first Premier League title. This year is undoubtedly the club’s biggest chance to fulfil their promise. One thing is for sure, however; Premier League title or not, Steven Gerrard will be remembered as one of the greatest footballers in Liverpool F.C. history, by fans and players alike.
