Manchester United fans must be sick to death of the will-they-won’t-they Di Maria talk all summer, having already seen the proposed Vidal deal, which seemed a certainty only weeks ago, come to nothing.
Former legend Paul Scholes is now calling for drastic action as the pressure mounts on boss Louis van Gaal to make some waves in the final days of the transfer window.
Paul Scholes has echoed the frustrations of the Old Trafford faithful, writing in The Independent he has called for five new signings and fears his beloved United may be facing an appalling vista with new recruits desperately needed to arrest the decline.
“I feel it is time for major change. What do United need? Five players. Not five players with potential. Five experienced players … for now. Five proper players who can hit the ground running and turn around a situation that looks desperate. United’s forwards are as good as any team in the league. The problem is what comes behind them.”
“My five would be: Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Raphaël Varane, Angel Di Maria and Mats Hummels. It would be one very big cheque for Real Madrid, given that four of them would come from that club. It would be hard to land them all. But that is the level that United need at this stage of the transfer window.”
The Di Maria option looks more likely now following Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti’s comments reported in The Mail.
‘He asked to leave, he didn’t accept the proposal for the renewal of the contract. He’s a Real Madrid player and until August 31, as I’ve already said, anything can happen
This statement is fairly unambiguous, Di Maria wants out, Real Madrid won’t stand in his way- the ball is firmly in United’s court. The field is clear with Paris Saint Germain, previous front-runners to land the winger, out of the race due to financial fair play rules according to The Star.
The price tag is £100 million overall a £50million transfer fee and £50 million in wages over 5 years-‘ make it happen now Woodward’ will be the message from Man Utd fans.
As for the other targets Scholes mentioned di Maria’s club mate Sami Khedira is in a similar position, in that he wants to quit the Bernabeu and Ancelotti will allow him leave. The valuation for the German would be substantially less as he is only one year left on his contract and is refusing to sign an extension.
Los Bloncos are willing to offer a knockdown price of £12 million to avoid losing the wantaway midfielder on a free next summer. The Mail reports that van Gaal is keen to sign Khedira too but other sources such as The Express make Arsenal and Chelsea favourites to close the deal.
