Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has clearly identified the midfield as an area that needs serious renovation this summer.
Having already agreed a deal for Marko Grujić, allegedly already having spoken to Udinese’s Polish international Piotr Zieliński and been heavily linked to Bayern’s Mario Götze, the club are now looking at highly-rated Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud to bolster their ranks, according to the Times.
Dahoud has built up a strong partnership in the centre with reported Arsenal target Granit Xhaka as Gladbach recovered from a woeful start to their Bundesliga season by propelling themselves right into the hunt to qualify for the Champions League for the second year in succession.
Having had something of a breakout season at the Borussia-Park this season, the German under-21 international is set to be a wanted man in the summer. The report states that Klopp’s former club Borussia Dortmund will provide stiff compettion for Dahoud as they look to fill the gap set to be left by the departing İlkay Gündoğan.
The involvement of Dortmund (with Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham all reportedly keeping tabs too), plus the fact that Gladbach would be loath to allow both Xhaka and Dahoud to leave the club this summer, mean that they would hope to bring in upwards of €30million to compensate for the loss of an important player.
Any move for Dahoud (or at least the greatest bargaining position for the player himself) would be Liverpool’s involvement in Europe next season. Realistically their only hope of being in the Champions League next year is by winning this campaign’s Europa League, a tall order given the calibre of some of the teams still involved.
Klopp had a massive influence in convincing Schalke defender Joël Matip to sign for Liverpool this summer, and the club will undoubtedly be hoping that the manager will be have some clout in persuading Dahoud to move to Anfield also – as is the case with Emre Can, with whom the player shares an agent.
With so many midfielders being linked to the club, speculation will continue to mount around the future of Joe Allen – whose contract expires next year – but also that of Lucas Leiva and even captain Jordan Henderson.
