Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has hinted that he will make moves for Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind, writes Dan Dalton.
Manchester United have been linked with the pair all summer, with speculation intensifying in the last number of days after Di Maria’s move to PSG collapsed while Blind admitted that a move to Old Trafford would be difficult to turn down.
Van Gaal was speaking to the Mail on Sunday and indicated that the possible signing of Di Maria would give his side another dimension.
“You cannot compare how the players will do under the guidance of Moyes with those same players under the guidance of Louis van Gaal.Every trainer and coach and manager wants a different style of play and different tactics. Now we have five No 9s and four No 10s and we don’t have wingers to play attacking width, not at the highest level, of Ronaldo or Di Maria or something like that.
So I have to play also in another way and you have seen that. It’s a strategy of Manchester United to buy players who are on the way up and getting better, but I only buy when I think we need to.”
A transfer fee of £55m may be required to acquire the Argentine winger’s services, and it would be a major signal of intent if United were to pull off this signing, another option could be Juan Cuadrado. But it is clear that United will be targeting a wide player in the next number of weeks
As James Rodriguez has signed as the new “Galactico” by Real Madrid President Florentino Perez, it seems that Di Maria is surplus to requirements at the Spanish giants and with PSG out of the running, this may increase the chances of a move to Old Trafford.
Van Gaal also hinted at a move for Daley Blind when speaking to the Mail on Sunday.
“If they are at the level I want them to be, then I will sign Dutch players. Dutch players are usually cheaper than players of other nationalities and they have usually been very well educated in the Netherlands, I believe.”
Blind is capable of playing in a left wing back role as seen at this year’s World Cup and he has even featured as a left sided centre half, but most of his appearances for Ajax last year were in the centre of midfield. Such versatility could make the the Dutch international a very valuable addition.
Blind is under contract until 2016 and it is believed that he could be purchased for about £15-£17 million and with Louis Van Gaal admitting that he could target Dutch talent, a deal is looking an increasing possibility.
Manchester United have already signed Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera and look set to recruit more talent in the next few weeks, with a winger and a left sided defender top priorities for Louis Van Gaal.
