Reports in the press today are suggesting that, incredibly, Manchester United are interested in signing Liverpool player Joe Allen.
With Sunday’s transfer deadline looming, and Manchester United badly misfiring on the pitch, boss Louis van Gaal is under huge pressure to land more players in these last few days.
The signing of Angel di Maria has given the Old Trafford faithful something to cheer about but they will feel the current squad is not good enough to get their beloved team back to the top table.
The Star reports that Louis van Gaal is fan of Joe Allen and would be willing to stump up a £20 million fee to bring the Welshman to Old Trafford.
Even in today’s world with mega money contracts and zero club loyalty moving from Liverpool to hated rivals United would still represent an audacious move and the Kop would be unlikely to welcome the player back to Anfield if he ever took this step.
An indication of the magnitude of such a move is that only five Liverpool players have ever transferred to United, all in the distant past. Former Liverpool player Michael Owen also went to United but not directly, even so this move did not go down well in the tribal North West. Liverpool fans will be hoping that these reports in the press are only idle gossip, and that Allen himself would not be so insane to contemplate a move.
The Express reports that the deal to bring long term target ArturoVidal to United is still very much on with a £34 million transfer fee required. It is difficult to know what is holding up the deal; is it question marks around the Chilean’s fitness that are giving van Gaal pause for thought or are the Italians holding out for more cash?
Javier Hernandez who is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford could be used as makeweight in the deal. After all the talk over the summer surely United fans won’t be in for a last minute let down.
Daley Blind has been linked with United for the past number of weeks and Louis van Gaal is still very keen to land his compatriot, according to The Express. The Dutchman is a highly versatile player and can play at centre half, left back or defensive midfield and would be available for a fee of around £18 million from Ajax Amsterdam.
However, Blind’s agent, Rob Jansen, has said that Manchester United have not made a formal approach for the player. He was quoted as saying.
“At this moment Manchester United have not been in touch with me or Ajax about Daley and I’m not sitting here waiting for the call”
