Manchester United Linked With Xabi Alonso

Speculation is rife that Manchester United are looking to sign Real Madrid central midfielder Xabi Alonso, according to the Daily Express.

With Manchester United fans crying out for at least one more signing before the summer transfer window closes it looks as though a move for Xabi Alonso is now not out of the question.

Alonso would immensely improve United’s midfield with his outstanding passing ability. A player that is so well suited to central midfield due to his footballing intelligence and grace on the ball, Alonso could be the missing link in the Manchester midfield.

He has everything needed to play in a deeper lying role and this is a position that  United would likely aim to use him for, should he sign.

Last season brought the Spanish international success at club level with Real Madrid finally winning their tenth European title, although he didn’t feature in the Champions League final due to suspension.

The midfielder isn’t known for his goalscoring exploits but he would be a perfect addition to United’s midfield where he could provide cover for the more attack minded midfielders in the side such as Juan Mata and new signing Ander Herrera.

On the other hand Real Madrid will be losing one of their top midfield players if Alonso is to move on. At the age of 32 and with a vast amount of midfield talent at their disposal the European Champions may be looking to cash out on a player who may only have another couple of years left at his peak.

The current transfer window has not quite lived up to the expectations many had coming into the season, possibly Alonso can be a signal of intent and show that United are worthy of being touted for, at the very least, a top four finish.
