Manchester United have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of Angel Di Maria as he looks set to move to the club in a deal worth between £48-£55m.
According to ESPN Manchester United are also looking to sign Daley Blind and are looking at recruiting a midfielder, who is thought to be Nigel De Jong according to the Mirror.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has revealed that Di Maria is also set to be handed the Manchester United number seven shirt which was last worn by Antonio Valencia.
“So advanced, in fact, are the negotiations that it has already been agreed that Di Maria will wear the number seven shirt, worn in the past by no lesser players than David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and Bryan Robson.”
Former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is said to have convinced the Argentine of a move to Old Trafford despite the fact that they will not be playing Champions League football next year.
According to the Mirror Di Maria is set to sign a five-year-deal with the Argentine earning £180,000 a week.
Van Gaal spoke to the Mail on Sunday earlier in the month and indicated that he would be interested in Dutch talent.
“If they are at the level I want them to be, then I will sign Dutch players. Dutch players are usually cheaper than players of other nationalities and they have usually been very well educated in the Netherlands, I believe.”
Van Gaal could be set be set to sign the Dutch duo of Daley Blind and Nigel De Jong along with Di Maria in the next week.
Daley Blind has been linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer and according to ESPN, Van Gaal will look to tie up a deal for the Ajax player in the next week.
Blind will offer Manchester United versatility and Van Gaal is clearly a fan of the player who was an ever present in the Netherlands World Cup campaign.
The 24-year-old has two years remaining on his contract with Ajax and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer.
United are currently also looking to sign a midfielder and with Arturo Vidal set to stay at Juventus they have turned their attentions to former Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong according to the Mirror.
It is thought that the midfielder who will be 30 in November can be purchased for £8m from AC Milan.
Manchester United look set to have a new high profile signing ready to wear the illustrious number seven shirt and there should be more arrivals to follow as Van Gaal looks to add much needed quality to a United side that finished 7th in the Premier League last season.
