According to Spanish newspaper Marca Manchester United are in advanced talks with Real Madrid to sign Argentine winger Angel Di Maria for a reported fee of £56m.
Di Maria was left out of Real Madrid’s squad for the 2nd Leg of their Spanish Super Cup tie with La Liga Champions Athletico Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to their City rivals on Friday night.
The Real Madrid boss admitted that Di Maria was unsettled at the Bernabeu and is seeking a move away.
“Di Maria has asked to leave and rejected [a contract] offer from club. [But] if he does not find a future solution he stays, no problem.
Fellow Argentine international Marcos Rojo has joined the Red Devils and there have been reports that that Di Maria has told he Argentine compatriot that he is keen to join him at Old Trafford.
In an interview with the Telegraph Van Gaal admitted he is looking to sign more players following the arrival of Rojo.
“You have to buy what can to improve your team. That’s why I bought Marcos Rojo, because he can play in two positions. So for us he is very good. We shall buy maybe more players”
Di Maria who was once renowned as an out and out pacey winger but has impressed for Real Madrid in a central role more recently. The 26-year-old would add quality and also positional flexibility, a trait that Louis Van Gaal likes his players to possess.
Van Gaal has been chasing a marquee signing all summer with Mats Hummels and Arturo Vidal both linked and Di Maria is also a stellar name and a potential £56m would a record transfer fee for Manchester United.
Di Maria has made a total of 190 appearances for Real Madrid scoring 36 goals and has perhaps been under appreciated as stars such as Cristiano Ronald0, Gareth Bale and now James Rodriguez enjoy a higher profile than the Argentine.
The 26-year-old was man of the match as Real Madrid secured their tenth European Cup success but his time at the Bernabeu looks to be coming to an end and Manchester United may now be set to secure a marquee signing to compete with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
With recent reports in Spanish newspaper Marca Manchester United could be about to break their transfer record to secure the services of one of the finest midfielders in European football.
