Manchester city have announced the signing of highly rated young defender Eliaqium Mangala on their official website. The fee is not disclosed but the France international is expected to cost in the region of £32m.
The 23-year-old was part of the French World Cup squad and impressed for Portuguese giants FC Porto last season. He will now join former FC Porto teammate Fernando at the Ethihad.
Mangala explained his delight at the move on Manchester City’s official website.
“City is a top club in Europe. For me, it was an important step to leave Porto and join Manchester City in order to continue my progress. I want to win titles and I believe I can do this. I am ambitious and this is why I am here.
“I’m very happy to come to England because for me, the Premier League is the best league in the world. It is a very intense and very aggressive competition. There are plenty of goals, so it is also really nice to watch and I can’t wait to get started!
“The fact that Fernando is here is better because I played with him at Porto but there is also other players that I know like Sagna, Clichy and Nasri.
Manchester City have finally acquired their man and at the age of twenty three, the young defender should have plenty of room for improvement. He is now likely to partner Vincent Kompany in the centre of the Manchester City defence.
Manuel Pellegrini spoke of his delight that the move is now finalized on Manchester City’s official website and clearly sees the French international as a very valuable addition.
“I’m delighted to have added a player of Eliaquim’s quality in the squad ahead of the new season.
“He is already a fine player but in my opinion, he has all of the mental, physical, technical and tactical attributes to become one of Europe’s very best defenders.
“Eliaquim is a player I believe will make an immediate impact in the Premier League, thanks to his physicality, his reading of the game and quality on the ball.
“I think he will prove to be a great signing for us.
The 23-year-old has featured in the Champions League in the last four out of five seasons, so he is experienced at the highest level of European football for a defender so young.
Mangala started his career at Standard Liege as the defender moved to Belgium as a five-year-old, however he has chosen to represent the country he was born in, making his debut for Les Bleus in June 2013 against Uruguay.
The young defender won the Portuguese league title twice with FC Porto in 2011/12 and 2012/13 and will now join the reigning Premier League champions for a reported fee of £32m.
