Brendan Rodgers’ spending has been the big news of the transfer window so far and with £100 million worth of signings already confirmed more are expected. Liverpool fans, still mourning the loss of Luis Suarez, are struggling to keep pace with all the developments.
The Guardian reports that Liverpool are close to bringing in Atletico Madrid youngster Javier Manquillo in on a one-year loan deal with a view to making the move permanent thereafter. Arsenal are also interested, but the 20-year-old is understood to favour a move to Anfield in the hope of more first team appearances.
The Spaniard could be a long term replacement for current right back Glen Johnson who has only one year left on his contract.
Brendan Rodgers is also looking for more options on the other side of the defence, but there is no definite news yet reports The Mail. The Reds boss missed out on Swansea’s Ben Davies who opted for a move to Tottenham Hotspur while Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno has also been a summer target. Rodgers has tabled a £16 million bid for the 22-year-old right full back but his club are holding out for a £20 million price tag, believing perhaps that the big spending Merseysiders won’t fret too much over an extra £4 million.
Xherdan Shaqiri’s name has been linked with a move to Anfield and the Swiss playmaker has left his future plans very open in an interview with Italian paper Tuttosport.
“I have a contract with Bayern Munich, which expires in 2016 and today that is the only certainty for me.
“Juventus? I have had no contact, just as I do not know of interest from Liverpool and Monaco.”
This ambiguous statement is good news for Liverpool who were previously thought to have been behind Juventus in the race to land the Bayern Munich star.
