Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers may make one more last minute signing before the transfer window closes, while he also looks to sell on a few players who are surplus to requirements.
With a lot of work done in the transfer window already, most commentators were of the view that the Mario Balotelli signing was the final piece in the jigsaw for Brendan Rodgers. However there are reports of one more possible big signing to interest the faithful. Also the Reds boss is thought to be keen to offload a few players, in addition to Joe Allen, who has been sensationally linked with a move to Manchester United.
The scramble to sign Bayern Munich player Xherdan Shaqiri continues with Liverpool still interested, according to Spanish sports newspaper Diario AS . The midfielder had been linked with a move to Merseyside earlier on in the summer but now it appears that La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are leading the race to sign the 22-year-old following reports of club officials travelling from Madrid to hammer out a deal with the Bavarian club.
The Swiss player, nicknamed the ‘Alpine Messi’, would suit Rodgers’ style of play perfectly but it remains to be seen if Rodgers, who has already landed a whole host of players over the summer, is willing to go for one last splurge to nab Shaqiri from under the noses of the Spanish outfit.
The other main news of interest to Liverpool fans in the last week of the transfer window is the identity of those heading for the exit door. Italian striker Fabio Borini has made little impact for Liverpool since signing in 2012, but had a successful loan spell with Sunderland last season.
The Black Cats would like to make the move permanent but AC Milan, who are looking at a number or strikers to replace the departed Mario Balotelli, have now thrown their hat in the ring, according to Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is keen to sign the striker but has called for Borini to get off the fence. He was quoted in The Mail as saying
“I think we’re getting close to a final decision either way because it’s been a bit too long. It’s time now that it’s a yes coming or a no as we need to move on.”
The feeling is that Borini, unsurprisingly, would choose Milan over the North East of England but the player would not be the Serie A giants’ first choice.
The Guardian reports that Daniel Agger is another player who could be on the way out. The stalwart centre back has been edged out of the first team last season and things don’t look any better going forward with the arrival of Dejan Lovern over the summer. The player himself has admitted his future is uncertain.
“The future is complicated. There are a few things that has to be sorted and we have to take it from there. I actually don’t know what will happen. It is a bit up to Liverpool.”
There are no firm reports of a possible destination for the disaffected Dane but rumours of a move to Barcelona are been bandied about.
