The question all summer long for Liverpool fans is where are the 31 goals scored by the Luis Suarez in last term going to come from next season?
Liverpool really need to back up last season’s impressive showing to cement their re-emergence as a force in English football. While Rodgers has been spending cash in the transfer window signing good players, the Reds, having missed out on Alexis Sanchez, really want one mega deal as a statement of intent for the coming season.
The Independent reports that Brendan Rodgers is interested in Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich also in the running. The German attacking midfielder who missed out on World Cup glory due to injury, would help re-invigorate a Liverpool frontline shorn of talisman Luis Suarez.
And while Reus would be an excellent signing, to snatch Chilean Arturo Vidal from under the nose of Louis Van Gaal, would really signal a power shift from Old Trafford to Anfield.
The Star reports that that the battle between the two bitter rivals is hotting up, with Real Madrid dropping out of the race having already secured the signatures of German World Cup star Toni Kroos and Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez. Vidal for his part has been very non committal in his public comments as to where he is destined, if indeed he leaves Juventus at all.
“It’s difficult to speak of other teams when you are already at a top club.
“I have heard about the interest shown by Real Madrid and [Manchester] United in me but there is someone [Vidal’s agent] who deals with this.
“Once I arrive to Italy I will speak to the coach and see what happens.”
‘The ‘For Sale’ signs up on Vidal’s Turin house may be an indication that his thoughts are turning from Italy to the north West of England.
Meanwhile the deal to bring Croat Dejan Lovren to Anfield is still not closed but it is almost certain to go through for a fee of £20 million, with Southampton having given up hope of hanging onto their centre back according to The Independent.
The Reds boss is also pursuing the signature of Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand for the left back berth, having lost out to Tottenham for Ben Davies and refusing to meet Sevilla’s valuation of Alberto Moreno according to The Express. The 24-year-old, who Rodgers had coached during his stint at Stamford Bridge spent the latter half of last season on loan at Aston Villa. He is already the subject of an £8 million Liverpool offer, however Jose Mourinho is reluctant to sell to a direct rival, although an improved offer may ease his concerns.
