Khabib Nurmagomedov is getting ready to fight Edson Barboza at UFC 219 on December 30.
‘The Eagle’ has been the brunt of jokes concerning his weight-cutting difficulties amongst a range of MMA followers since his failure to fulfil his scheduled bout with Tony Ferguson back at UFC 209. Khabib was hospitalised on the eve of the weigh-ins for that mouthwatering lightweight matchup as a result of a failed weight-cut.
While the Russian was in a position where a victory over Ferguson back in March would have granted him a crack at the champion of the division Conor McGregor, he has consequently seen that opportunity slip away for the time being, albeit not too far into the horizon.
A win over Barboza will see Khabib right back in title contention at 155 lbs.
In the intervening period between his withdrawal from that clash with ‘El Cucuy’ and before he takes to the Octagon at the end of December, the latter has gone on to clinch the lightweight interim-title with an impressive win over Kevin Lee.
Nurmagomedov will be hoping to avoid the first loss of his career at UFC 219 in the knowledge that a shot at Ferguson, who he has never fought before despite being matched up against him three times in the past, before taking on McGregor is a strong likelihood. In the clip below the 29-year-old shares his belief that he would steamroll through both the champ and interim-champ on the same night.
He also jokes about the lengths he will go to in order to successfully weigh-in under the 155-lbs limit for lightweight.
