Fresh media reports have linked Manchester United with Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong, writes Rob Lyons.
After finishing a relatively successful World Cup campaign in his international role with the Netherlands, it now looks as though Louis van Gaal could be linked with yet another Dutch player in Nigel De Jong. The tenacious midfielder could be making the move to Old Trafford, according to The Mirror.
Nigel De Jong is currently at Serie A side AC Milan where he featured heavily last season in both the league and Champions League and appears to have impressed his national team manager enough to earn a move to Manchester United. Van Gaal’s side are looking for a turnaround in fortunes following the disappointment of last season and the centre of the park has been pinpointed as an area that needs further strengthening.
De Jong would give United a solidity in midfield next season that was perhaps lacking at times last term. The league is where it will be crucial for Manchester United to improve as they aim to become one of Europe’s elite sides once again and improving on twelve league defeats last season could be helped by having a player such as De Jong to shore up any attacking threats coming from midfield.
Add to this De Jong’s three seasons of Premier League experience with the blue half of Manchester and United could have a potential dream signing to accompany the club’s other midfield signing of Ander Herrera and last season’s addition, Juan Mata.
The injured Michael Carrick is also still in the squad and De Jong may possibly be a temporary replacement for the Englishman as well as competition once he returns from his injury.
