Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis is extremely close to making a move to Chelsea after the London club agreed a £20 million transfer fee for the Brazilian international, according to the Mail Online.
José Mourinho has turned his attention to the left-back position after the signing of Cesc Fabregas and Luis comes into a team in need of a replacement for the services of Ashley Cole, now with Serie A outfit Roma.
Luis leaves a very successful Atletico side that won La Liga last season as well as reaching the Champions League Final only to lose out to their cross city rivals. With all this success one can wonder why the player would want to move on, but a fresh challenge at Chelsea appeals to the full back and Luis wants to be part of the next chapter of the London club’s progression with Mourinho. Atletico look to be a selling club after all their success, with Luis following Diego Costa to Stamford Bridge.
With the Brazilian just missing out on inclusion with his international side for a home World Cup, the challenge of joining Chelsea and pushing César Azpilicueta close for the left-back position may improve his chances of becoming a bigger part of Brazil’s team.
Mourinho has proven once again that he is very shrewd in the transfer window signing players from a successful team in Europe, as well as domestically. Players like this are exactly what any manager would want and the experience that Costa and Luis have in Europe’s biggest competition will give Chelsea a psychological advantage over their competitors.
Defensively Chelsea were the Premier League’s best last season, conceding just 27 goals so the thought of this defence being improved by a Champions League finalist will make the test for England’s elite strikers and wingers that much tougher.
