Having already blown Everton’s transfer record out of the water with the big money signing of Romelu Lukaku, boss Roberto Martinez is still looking to strengthen his squad, but costs will be a consideration.
The Star reports that Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley could become an Everton player before the transfer window closes. The English star who, like so many others, failed to deliver during the David Moyes reign last year, could now find himself surplus to requirements under the Louis van Gaal regime who is looking to slash numbers and bring in more quality.
Roberto Martinez is a fan of the 24-year-old having worked with the midfielder during a loan spell at Wigan and an £8 million transfer fee could see him complete a move to Goodison Park.
In a setback for Martinez, it seems he will not now get Ghanaian Christian Atsu on a loan deal from Chelsea. The Toffees boss had been expected to bring the midfielder to Goodison Park as a squad player but Jose Mourinhno was unhappy with the proposed deal as it would not provide the 22-year-old prospect with the first team football his development requires.
Having failed in his efforts to land Atsu, Martinez has now turned his attention to Celto Vigo’s Nolito.
The winger, who enjoyed an excellent season in La Liga, gave Everton fans a timely reminder of his prowess with a first half hat trick against them in Wednesday’s pre-season friendly. The Toffees’ boss is known to be an admirer of the left winger but the stumbling block to closing the deal seems to be Celta Vigo’s £8 million plus price tag; a big ask for the Merseysiders who have already spent big this summer.
