Arsenal could be close to snapping up Daniel Agger with the Daily Express reporting that the centre back could be on his way to North London.
With Arsenal losing their club captain Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona there is a void to fill and Agger would certainly add a level of competition to last season’s pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
The partnership that the two Arsenal centre-backs had last season was formidable with just 41 league goals conceded. Although this isn’t outstanding it was a worthy return for a defence without it’s club captain in Vermaelen.
It is still only speculation as to whether Agger will actually leave Anfield but with Dejan Lovren now signing for the Red half of Liverpool there could be limited chances available for the Danish international.
Whether Liverpool would be willing to sell to a Premier League rival such as Arsenal could be a factor in a deal not formulating. Arsenal decided to sell Vermaelen to Barcelona, which could yet prove to be a very clever move as they have real title ambitions this year, particularly with the signing of top class striker, Alexis Sanchez and maybe Liverpool will follow suit when and/or if they decide Agger should move on.
The question of whether Agger would manage to command a starting place every week is debatable but competition for Arsenal’s defence would certainly not be hampered by Agger who would still have a lot to offer Arsenal at 29.
