Arsenal are looking to sign a midfielder after an injury to Mikel Arteta and, according to the Daily Mirror, they are keen to sign Sami Khedira for £12 million following the news that he has rejected a contract offer at Real Madrid.
Arsene Wenger has stated that he may look to be “creative” in the remaining days of the transfer window and admitted they are open to adding to their squad.
“If it’s a long-term injury [for Arteta] that puts us in a position where we have to be creative.
“We are not in an emergency case but we are open to any opportunity to strengthen our defensive department.
Khedira is now likely to leave the Spanish gianst after refusing to sign a new contract with Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The 27-year-old German was injured for much of last season and Arsenal are hoping for the midfielder to lower his £200,000 wage.
Bayern Munich have also been linked with the German international after losing Javi Martinez through a cruciate knee ligament injury and Bastian Schweinsteiger faces a spell on the sidelines for the next few weeks.
Arsenal are also thought to be monitoring Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, however the asking price for the young midfielder is expected to be in the region of £25m and with the 22-year-old unproven in a top European league, the Gunners may now turn their attentions towards Khedira.
Khedira started his career with Stuttgart and made a total of 98 appearances for their first team, scoring 14 goals. He then impressed as a 23-year-old at the 2010 World Cup for Germany earning a move to Real Madrid alongside Mesut Ozil. The 27-year-old made a total of 91 appearances for Real and scored 6 goals.
Doubts remain about the German’s fitness as he played in only 13 games last season and pulled out of the World Cup final in the pre-match warm up.
Arsenal would be able to sign the highly rated midfielder on a cut price of £12m which in today’s market where inflated transfer fees are commonplace it would represent good business by the Gunners.
The Gunners are expected to sign one, if not two, players to add more depth to their squad and don’t be surprised if Sami Khedira is playing his football at the Emirates at the end of the month.
