Tottenham – Thursday’s Transfer News

Mixed news for Tottenham fans on Thursday, as Hugo Lloris commits to the club and Jan Vertonghen is linked with a move to Catalan giants Barcelona.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has put rumours about a departure from North London to bed by signing a new five-year contract with the club. The deal is a massive boost to Mauricio Pochettino’s side, as the French stopper had been linked with a move to some of Europe’s top teams. Paris Saint-Germain were said to be particularly interested in the keeper, but Tottenham fans can now rest assured that Lloris will be between the sticks for the upcoming Premier League season.

The news was released via the official Tottenham Twitter page:

In news that will make Tottenham fans wince, Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Jan Vertonghen according to the London Evening Standard. Vertonghen played a major role in Belgium’s World Cup campaign and has alerted the attention of a number of European clubs, all of which can offer Champions League football.

There have been a number of departures and arrivals at Barcelona this summer, most notably the impending signing of Luis Suarez, and their spending spree does not look like stopping. With the retirement of Carles Puyol, Vertonghen has been earmarked as a potential long-term replacement for the Barcelona legend.

Vertonghen has two years remaining on his contract, but the lure of Champions League football could prove to be the difference.

Pundit Arena reported yesterday that Tottenham are set to offer £5 million to secure the signing of Jamaal Lascelles. However, the young defender is unproven in the Premier League so any void left by a Vertonghen departure would have to be filled immediately.
