Joe Rogan has made a pretty strong argument for TJ Dillashaw’s inclusion in the pound-for-pound number one discussion following his UFC 217 victory over Cody Garbrandt.
The UFC rankings and, in particular, its pound-for-pound rankings can often be a fickle and inconsistent indicator of where fighters stand in relation to each other. Sure, it’s fun to see the very best of the best compiled into an easy-to-digest format that stacks their respective accomplishments against each other but really, these rankings are for nothing more than the fan’s enjoyment and hold no bearing over anyone’s career in truth.
Of course, the top-ranked fighter in the world as of right now is the flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson but doubts have been circling his claim to the position for some time due to the supposed-weakness of the division he rules over. Flyweight gets a pretty bad rap due to its champ’s acceleration and growth as a martial artist but when you look down the rankings, some serious talent exists from top-to-bottom, both in terms of seasoned vets and decorated prospects.
Still, though, the lack of any real challenger to Johnson’s throne has caused speculation about a leap up to the bantamweight division to reach an all-time high and following his UFC 217 title-winning victory over Cody Garbrandt, TJ Dillashaw seems like the man who will be tasked with fighting ‘Mighty Mouse’ in his next outing.
Dillashaw’s recent run since losing one of the closest fights of 2016 against Dominick Cruz has seen him defeat John Lineker, Raphael Assuncao and most recently, the aforementioned Garbrandt and despite the earlier blemish on his record that saw him lose his title, his performance against the legendary Cruz proved his quality beyond question.
Joe Rogan, in a recent edition of the Joe Rogan Experience, made some points about Dillashaw’s progression in his last few fights and how a win over Demetrious Johnson would see his stock rise amongst those in the pound-for-pound rankings.
“TJ’s a f***ing killer. He’s a killer. What he did to Renan Barao is insane and what he just did to Cody, coming off the deck and KO’ing Cody Garbrandt like that, that’s f***ing insane too. He’s in rare form. So him versus ‘Mighty Mouse’ is the fight.
“Which one of these guys is arguably the best fighter in the world? Because right now we think it’s Mighty Mouse, but that thing always moves around. When Jon Jones knocks out Daniel Cormier you go ‘damn, I almost want to give it to Jon’, but then Jon tests positive.
“It’s Jon and DJ. Demetrious in my eyes is number-1 as Jon is a position where he’s probably going to get suspended. And then, it’s probably TJ, if not Georges St-Pierre.”
