Tamberi’s gold was Italy’s third of the Tokyo games and was quickly followed by another when Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the men’s 100m final. With Tamberi still on the track, he was the first person that Jacobs embraced after crossing the line.

Barshim’s gold is Qatar’s second of the games. The 30-year-old’s results have progressed over the last three Olympics, having won bronze at London 2012 and silver at Rio 2016.

He has also won gold at the last two World Championships, most recently in his home city of Doha in 2019.

For Tamberi, it marks a sensational comeback after he missed the Rio Olympics due to a leg injury. To symbolise this, he had the cast he wore during his recovery by his side today as he clinched Olympic gold.

Some fine examples of the Olympic spirit on display today, it has to be said.
