2017 World Rugby Breakthrough Player Of The Year Has Been Announced

Tonight, the awards are taking place to be crowned World Rugby Player of the Year and World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year. There was fierce competition, with several remarkable candidates for each prize, but as ever there can only be one winner.

The nominees for the top award include All Blacks Rieko Ioane and Beauden Barrett, Wallaby Israel Folau, and English duo Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje.

However, the matter of World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year was the first to be decided. Ioane was up for both awards, and as expected he scooped the Breakthrough gong.

He beat off stiff competition in the form of Emiliano Boffelli and Damian Penaud.
