The Tongan Thor is a big deal in Australian rugby at the moment. After scoring a hat trick during a schoolboys game back in 2014, Taniela Tupou became an internet sensation and attracted the attention of a number of French clubs and the All Blacks.
However, the 135 kg prop opted to sign for the Queensland Reds, and was selected in the Wallabies side that toured Europe in the autumn – despite not yet being eligible to play for Australia.
Such is Tupou’s reputation, the Australian media have been falling over themselves in anticipation of him becoming eligible to play for the Wallabies, even producing this top five moments video last October.
Nevertheless, as the Tongan Thor has only made three Super Rugby appearances so far in his career, some have yet to be convinced of his ability, particularly at scrum time.
However, there is no questioning Tupou’s devastating potential with ball in hand, after he sent 43 times capped All Black Liam Messam into the air with this massive carry.
