Last weekend, Sonny Bill Williams received a yellow card and cause a penalty try to be awarded after suffering a bit of a brain fart vs France.
The referee handed out the punishment after Williams intentionally knocked a cross kick over the dead ball line which is legal in rugby league but not allowed in union play.
The referee has since apologised for booking Williams stating that awarding the penalty try should have been sufficient enough punishment while the All Black has also acknowledged that he should know the rules better.
“The penalty was obviously awarded, but he said he made that mistake by sending me off. It is what it is, that’s footy.” Williams said speaking to Newshub.
“I should’ve been looking up the rule books. I remember laying on the ground and I looked up at Jimbo [Damian MacKenzie] and I said ‘Bro, am I allowed to do that?’ He looked at me and he shook his head. It was an honest mistake, just like the ref sending me off was an honest mistake.”
Speaking at a press conference since the match in question, Williams got a bit of stick from teammate Rieko Ioane as the 20-year-old stated that Sonny Bill sometimes forgets what sports he’s playing while he also had a pop off his teammate’s brutal moustache.
‘He forgets what sport he’s playing sometimes. You know he does boxing and league so, ya know, he changes up between the three but, we’ll forgive him for that… We’ll forgive him for his moustache as well.’
