Watch: Ma’a Nonu Sat Down By Thunderous Fend From La Rochelle’s Levani Botia

It’s fair to say Toulon are not enjoying their most prosperous season.

Although the three-time European Champions managed to squeeze into the knock-out phase of the Champions Cup, they only did so by the skin of their teeth following a less than inspiring pool campaign.

Likewise, with the club lying in fifth place on the Top 14 table, Toulon’s domestic campaign hasn’t gone to plan either.

Their indifferent form on the pitch has been mirrored by uncertainty off it, where Mourad Boudjellal fired Diego Domínguez within weeks of the season kicking off, hired Mike Ford and Richard Cockerill and is now reportedly flirting with the idea of employing Fabien Galthié.

To make matters worse, Boudjellal threatened to sack “everybody” if Toulon lost against La Rochelle this weekend.

And so it came to pass that Toulon conspired to lose against La Rochelle at home 23-20. Whether or not Boudjellal stays true to his threat remains open to question, but one player who should be feeling the heat is Ma’a Nonu.

Although the former All Black impressed against Saracens last weekend, overall his performances since joining Toulon have been underwhelming.

Against La Rochelle for example, he was left embarrassed by Kini Murimurivalu, who went past Nonu as if he wasn’t there.

Worse still for the former All Black enforcer, Levani Botia sent Nonu tumbling to the ground with an impressive hand-off earlier in the game.

The replays seemed to suggest Nonu wasn’t prepared for the impact as he looked to drift toward the wing instead of closing down the space in front of the Fijian fullback.
