Watch: Frans Steyn Shown Red Card For Sickening Hit On Johnny Sexton

Montpellier fly-half Frans Steyn was shown a red card for his high tackle on Leinster fly-half Johnny Sexton during the first-half of the Blues penultimate Pool 4 clash with the Top 14 contenders at the RDS on Friday.

Friday’s game in Dublin marked Sexton’s first return to European Rugby after returning last week from recurring hamstring injuries in a 70-6 mauling against Zebre.

The Ireland outhalf was comfortably guiding Leinster around the park until Steyn nearly ended the playmakers evening with a swinging arm to Sexton’s jaw.

Sexton was immediately removed from the field to undergo a HIA while Steyn tried to plead his innocence with referee JP Doyle. Steyn attempted to plead with Doyle that Sexton was dipping towards the ground, and that the contact was accidental, however, Doyle quickly dismissed the South African’s suggestions.

After a brief consultation with assistant referee Wayne Barnes, Doyle showed Steyn a red card and all but ended Montpellier’s chances of grabbing the win and topping Pool 4.
