One of the more bizarre rugby stories of 2017 emerged today, as it was confirmed that Wales hooker Scott Baldwin was forced out of the Ospreys’ tie with Cheetahs in South Africa because he was bitten by a Lion.
A lion bite certainly strays from the usual torn hamstring or concussion when it comes to reasons for missing a match, as the rugby world came to terms with the baffling news.
Footage of the incident has been doing the rounds, and it looks painful.
Baldwin is seen petting the lion, before the animal reaches up and bites his hand.

Ospreys head coach Steve Tandy, speaking after the game, wasn’t too impressed with his player.
“I don’t know what kind of wildlife programme Scott had been watching that you can pat a Lion on the head as if it’s a kitten.
“It’s probably one of the silliest things I’ve been involved in, but thankfully he’s OK and hopefully he’ll be up and running in the next couple of weeks.”
Baldwin probably won’t live this one down for a long time to come.
