On Monday evening, rugby fans were sad to learn that Irish legend Tommy Bowe plans on hanging up his boots at the end of the current season.
Explaining his decision via a heartwarming and honest open letter, the Ulster and Ireland winger stated that, although he will miss the special moments with his teammates on the field of play, he felt fortunate to be able to call time on his career after 14 years in professional rugby.
As the saying goes, time stands still for no man (or sportsman). And so, 14 years on from signing my first professional contract with Ulster Rugby, I feel very fortunate to be able to say this will be my final season.
Speaking about Bowe’s retirement, Ulster and Ireland captain Rory Best said that he had shared some incredible times with the Monaghan man and his talent as a player was only outshone by his qualities as a man.
“In my opinion, his qualities as a player are exceeded only by his qualities as a person. He is a genuine, honest, humble guy, and I have the utmost respect for him.”
As rugby fans come to terms with the retirement of one of Ireland’s greatest servants, an exhilarating video of some of Bowe’s greatest tries has started to do the rounds online.
Although we’d certainly have number three at number one given the significance of the moment for Ireland’s Grand Slam in 2009, the five included are certainly all well worth the watch and perfectly capture the extraordinary talent of the retiring winger.
