Leinster may have lost to Clermont Auvergne today in Lyon and exited the European Champions Cup at the most agonizing of stages, but with words like ‘courageous’, ‘brave’ and ‘valiant’ or their synonyms being used to describe the side’s performance in just about every media headline, fans of the eastern province have plenty of reason to feel proud of their team.
Leo Cullen’s men went 15-0 down early on, but battled back in a gutsy second-half display, at one point clawing themselves to within two points of the French outfit. In the end, however, they couldn’t quite catch Clermont, who tagged on two late drop goals to seal victory by a scoreline of 27-22.
Later in the evening, at the airport, Leinster fans expressed admiration for the grit and gallantry they had seen from their heroes in blue at the Stade de Gerland, giving the team a warm and rousing round of applause as they made their way through departures.
