Chris Ashton is at the centre of yet more controversy.
Amidst what was a tight first half in the game between Saracens and the Northampton Saints, the TV cameras picked up footage allegedly showing Chris Ashton biting Alex Waller on the hand.
In the footage, Waller’s hand appeared to be in contact with Ashton’s face as both players grappled for possession. However, although the Northampton prop raised the issue with referee Greg Garner, Waller was told the incident would be reviewed after the game.
Saints coach Jim Mallinder told The Guardian after the match had concluded that ‘Alex repeated at half-time in the dressing room what he said to the referee, that he had been bitten on the hand’.
Although the citing commissioner will not pass judgement until after Mike Rafter meets with other officials later tonight, Saracens’ Director of Rugby Mark McCall didn’t appear too hopeful that Ashton would avoid a lengthy ban.
I have heard the accusation but did not see what happened and have yet to review the tape.
This will run its course and I suppose there is a good chance Chris will be cited.
For Ashton, the incident occurred as he was trying to earn a recall into the England team in front of the watching Eddie Jones.
