In an amazing game of rugby, South Africa’s Golden Lions thwarted Western Province 58 – 32, with the first score coming after only 35 seconds. The Lions’ wonderful handling skills and awareness of space and each other meant the first try of the game was one for the ages.
Few teams have the confidence to go wide from their own 22, let alone from pretty much the first second they touch the ball, but that is exactly what the Golden Lions did and it paid off handsomely.
Arguably South African needs something of a shot in the arm after the Lions lost 20 – 3 to the Hurricanes in this year’s Super Rugby final and the Springboks have suffered defeats to Ireland, Argentina and Australia this season already.
However, the Lions’ run of games in the Super Rugby competition and now the Golden Lions’ performances in the Currie Cup are offering South African rugby fans some form of optimism.

It’s clear there are plenty of players with fantastic skill sets in South Africa, but somehow the performances are just not coming at the highest level. Let’s hope the Springboks can start emulating the Lions a little more in the future.
