England could be sweating on the fitness of Billy Vunipola after he sustained an injury playing for Saracens this weekend.

The number eight had to be replaced at half time in Sarries’ 15-15 Champions Cup drw at Ospreys on Saturday – a result that puts the Premiership side’s hopes of retaining their title in serious risk and an injury that could greatly impact Vunipola’s chances of playing in the Six Nations.

Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall later confirmed that Vunipola had picked up an army injury, one that would need to be assessed immediately so as to ascertain the extent of the damage:

“{Vunipola} has an arm injury which we will obviously explore right away.

“I don’t know what the extent of the injury is.”

The 25-year-old has just recently returned from a serious injury, and having missed the Lions tour last year and the recent November internationals, having to sit out any of the Six Nations would be a massive blow to the player. The opener against Italy is only a few weeks away, and coach Eddie Jones is set to name his squad for this year’s championship this coming Thursday.

Saracens, meanwhile, are facing the prospect of early elimination from European competition after their stalemate in Wales on Saturday. They face Northampton Saints in their final pool match next weekend, but will need the meeting of Clermont and Ospreys to go their way if they are to stand any hope of progression to the quarter finals.
