Northampton Saints are back in the Champions Cup next season after beating Stade Francais but Tom Wood’s red card offence on Friday night is likely to dominate post-match discussion.
Midway through the second half the flanker stamped down on Djibril Camara’s head during a ruck, which left the French club’s wing bloodied.
With the Saints 22-16 behind at the time it could have ended their hopes of making up the deficit, but even without their captain the Premiership outfit were able to claw their way back into the game.
As for Wood though, this infraction could put an end to his hopes of touring Argentina with England this summer after what was a reckless decision by the 30-year-old.
Northampton eventually sealed the win, however, with a late try and conversion to make the final score 23-22 in their favour but Saturday’s column inches will likely be taken up by this unfortunate incident.
