There have only been six drop goals so far in the Rugby World Cup 2015. This is surprisingly low considering that Jonny Wilkinson knocked over eight on his own in the 2003 tournament, or Jannie de Beer recorded five in a single game in 1999.
Nonetheless, they are one of the more beautiful art forms in today’s game, and can be extremely effective. Only five men have pulled them off this month in England; Owen Farrell, Dan Biggar, Nicolas Sanchez, Dan Carter and Handre Pollard (twice).
World Rugby must be like the Pundit Arena community in appreciating a good drop goal, and they compiled a clip of all six efforts from the tournament.
Some fantastic efforts here, but which was the best? Considering the circumstances and time on the ball (or lack thereof), Carter’s three-pointer gets the nod from us.
Here’s to a few more drop goals in the final!
