The Aviva Premiership came back with a bang on Friday night as defending champions Exeter Chiefs were stunned by a dramatic Jason Woodward try as Gloucester scored an unlikely win.
Then on Saturday, we had the London Double Header in Twickenham as Saracens and new-boys London Irish took maximum points from the games against Northampton and Harlequins respectively.
Irish had a particularly impressive win as five-pointers from Topsy Ojo, Tommy Bell, Ofisa Treviranus and Brendan McKibbin ensured a bonus point win.
Speaking to Pundit Arena after the game. Bell was full of praise for teammate Ojo. The pair crossed over early to give the Exiles an 18-3 lead setting the foundation for this important victory.
Despite being 32 years old, Ojo brings a lot to the table – and this hasn’t gone unnoticed by Bell, who scored 24 points for Irish.
“It’s funny with wingers – as soon as they’re over 30 they are called old and slow – but he’s getting quicker.
“There is no reason for him to not keep getting quicker. He’s obviously a huge icon at the club; top try scorer, close to most appearances and he’s a great guy to have and he has a lot of experience.
“He’s getting better and better. That’s what we are about. We are growing our game slowly and, hopefully, we will start building momentum.”
Bell says that despite the impressive performance, it will take the newly-promoted side a few weeks to get back up to the pace of top-flight rugby.
“We will find our feet in the next couple of weeks in the Premiership. Obviously, we are coming from the Championship and making that step up again but we know what we are about.”
That said, London Irish made a statement of intent with this win on Saturday.
“It’s massive, we (had) to set our stall out. We put ourselves on display today.
“To come back into the Premiership against Quins on the big stage at Twickenham is obviously fantastic.”
The Exiles travel to Sandy Park to take on defending champions Exeter next weekend, as they look to keep their early momentum going this season.
