Three-Time British & Irish Lion Jason Leonard Appointed To Lions Board

Three-time Lions tourist and former RFU president Jason Leonard has been appointed to the British & Irish Lions board along with new RFU CEO Steve Brown.

The Lions board acts as the governing body for the British & Irish Lions team and is involved in the scheduling of tours as well as engaging in conversations regarding rugby’s world calendar and where that might effect the length of future tours.

The appointment of Leonard will be seen as a positive move towards the consideration of the modern rugby player and their welfare given Leonard is the first member of the board to have played rugby in the professional era.

The board is made up of two representatives from each of the home unions, one in a rugby capacity and the other is the respective union’s chief executive.

The current board is as follows:

Jason Leonard (England)

Steve Brown (RFU Chief Exec)

Andy Irvine (Scotland)

Mark Dodson (SRU Chief Exec)

Gareth Davies (Wales)

Martyn Phillips (WRU Chief Exec)

Tom Grace (Ireland & Chairman)

Philip Browne (IRFU Chief Exec)

Finance Director: Thelma O’Driscoll

Chief Operating Officer: Charlie McEwan

Chief Exec: John Feehan

Leonard was nominated by the RFU and had also been involved in the 2017 tour, launching the Pick of the Pride programme for young ambassadors from the Home Unions to go on the Tour and immerse themselves in the culture of New Zealand rugby, to understand the challenges facing youth rugby globally and establishing a network with their counterparts.
