The Left Out Of The England EPS XV

Eddie Jones unveiled his elite playing squad last week.

After claiming a Grand Slam triumph and a series whitewash over Australia, it seems Eddie Jones can do no wrong. Even England’s normally cantankerous rugby writers withheld their criticism after the Australian unveiled his Elite Playing Squad last week.

Indeed, the expected calls for the inclusion of Matt Kvesic were dispensed with after Jones left the Gloucester openside was once again left out. It would seem that those who once demanded the inclusion of a traditional number seven have changed their views.

However leaving Kvesic out must not have been the only tight call. Arguments could have easily been made for the inclusion of the likes of Harry Thacker, Dave Ewers, Danny Cipriani, Chris Ashton and Christian Wade.

Jones task is made all the more difficult by the fact he is selecting from a massive playing pool spread across twelve Premiership clubs. By contrast Ireland and Wales can only select from four professional sides.

Consequently, the depth of talent available to England creates a situation in which a very strong XV can be selected from the players who have been left out of the EPS.
