TBT: 1997 Lions Tour of South Africa

David Gantly looks back at the Lions’ last test series win, as they prepare for the crucial second test against Australia on Saturday.

As we look ahead in anticipation to the second test between Australia and The Lions in Brisbane, we look back at the last time The Lions were successful in the series. You have to go back sixteen years to 1997 and the tour of South Africa for the last test series win.

With the Lions having won the first test 25 – 16, they went in to the second test knowing the series was within reach and a moment of genius from inside centre Jeremy Guscott. What is now one of the most famous pieces of Lions footage, Guscott stood back in the hole with four minutes remaining and slotted a drop goal for the test series win.
Will there be similar drama in this test series starting this coming saturday?
We will have to wait and see.
Roll on Saturday!
