TBT: That Jonny Wilkinson Drop-Goal

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we look back at Jonny Wilkinson’s drop-goal in the 2001 World Cup Final which sealed victory for the English against the Aussies.

With the World Cup Final heading into extra-time at 17 – 17, the situation called a for a moment of individual brilliance and Wilkinson duly obliged. English scrum-half Matt Dawson breaks, sets up a platform for Wilkinson to work his magic and the rest is history. Kicking off his weaker right foot, the ball soared through the posts to send England and their supporters into dream land.

England had won the World Cup and Jonny Wilkinson had written himself into the World Cup history books.

With the next World Cup in England in 2015, can England challenge once again for the most coveted price in world rugby on their home turf?

2015 cannot come quick enough.
