TBT: British & Irish Lions Tour 2009

Dave Gantly remembers the British& Irish Lions Tour of South Africa in 2009.

With the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia squad announcement just twelve days away, the excitement is reaching fever pitch. The rumours regarding who will travel on the plane Down Under are going in to overdrive.

To build up the excitement even more, we are going to look back at the Lions Tour to South Africa in 2009. Unfortunately this series was lost 2 – 1 but it was full of moments of brilliance from the magnificent Rob Kearney at full back to Ugo Monye doing damage on the wing.

With Paul O’Connell as Captain, the Lions left South Africa disappointed but could hold their heads high. Now is the time for revenge. Can this Lions squad make it a first series win since 1997?

With the amount of quality players vying for places, you wouldn’t bet against them. Who will lead the team? Will Paul O’Connell once again assume the role or will Sam Warburton or Chris Robshaw take on the massive responsibility? We will find out with Warren Gatland’s squad announcement on the 30th of April.

Sport Is Everything. Dave Gantly.
