Steffon Armitage has asked to leave Toulon, Mourad Boudjellal has confirmed today. The club’s president has said that the English star wants to leave the French side. However, the Englsih club in question must pay compensation for the final year of his contract.

It is believed that the 30 year-old back-row star has spoken with Eddie Jones, and the lure of international rugby is leading his decision.

This would be a serious boost for the Red Rose, as Armitage is a flanker who can mix it with the very best in the world. While the trio of Chris Robshaw, James Haskell and Billy Vunipola possess power in spades, they are not as technical as Armitage, so his arrival would give Jones’ side an added dimension.

There are no clear front-runners to capture his signature, but Wasps are believed to be on the market for a replacement for George Smith.
